Marie and Monica Burns

For sisters Marie and Monica Burns, giving is deeply rooted in their Catholic faith and family values. They believe everything they have is a gift from God meant to be shared—and that when many people offer even a small portion, it can create something truly powerful.

Nearly thirty years ago, Marie and Monica became involved with Soup’s On For All, an annual fundraiser for God’s Kitchen, and they have remained dedicated ever since. Over time, God’s Kitchen became more than a charity to them; it became an expression of their faith in action.

As they began considering how their support could continue beyond their annual giving and volunteer hours, the sisters explored leaving a gift from their wills. They were surprised by how simple the process could be. With guidance from the Catholic Foundation, they directed their legacy gifts to Catholic Charities West Michigan to support the causes closest to their hearts. They received clear options, sample wording, and reassurance that legacy giving doesn’t have to be complicated.

As founding members of the Light of Christ Legacy Society, they encourage anyone who feels strongly about a ministry to get involved. Volunteering, they say, opens your heart to the mission and reveals the impact your generosity can make. They remind others that giving isn’t limited to writing a check today—through a legacy gift, you can look ahead, stay true to your intentions, and help the ministries you love continue to thrive long after you’re gone.

The Catholic Foundation of West Michigan would be honored to walk with you as you discover how your faith in action today can, like the Burns sisters, create a legacy for future generations.
